APTUKs Response To The New Pharmacy Technician qualification consultation

Skills for Health have been commissioned by Health Education England to facilitate the collaborative development of a new qualification to meet the Initial Education Training Standards (IETs) for pharmacy technicians. Skills for Health have been working with subject matter experts and educational Awarding Organisation to develop the qualification which will be made available in England and Wales in 2019.
On the 2nd July 2018, Skills for Health launched a consultation welcoming feedback on the content of the qualification.
The consultation closing date is 12pm noon on Monday 30th July. A copy of the consultation can be found here
APTUK as the professional leadership body for pharmacy technicians will be producing a consultation response on behalf of our members. Therefore, we would like you invite you to complete a survey based on the consultation to help formulate our response. The new qualification consists of 25 units and our surveys have been created to give you the option to answer questions on as many units as you would like.
The units are:
Unit 1: Communication
Unit 2: Governance
Unit 3: Personal Development
Unit 4: Health and Safety
Unit 5 :Person Centred Care
Unit 6: Principles of health promotion
Unit 7: Provide an effective and responsive pharmacy service
Unit 8 : Order receive maintain and supply stock
Unit 9: Assess the suitability of an individuals own meds
Unit 10: Retrieve and reconcile info about meds
Unit 11: Assemble and Check Dispensed Medicines and Products
Unit 12: Receive Prescriptions
Unit 13: Issue Prescribed Items
Unit 14: Chemical Principles for Pharmacy Technicians
Unit 15: Biological Principles for Pharmacy Technicians
Unit 16 :Microbiology for Pharmacy Technicians
Unit 17: Human physiology for Pharmacy Technicians
Unit 18 :Actions and Uses of Medicines
Unit 19: Gastrointestinal and nutritional medicines
Unit 20: Cardio- respiratory medicines
Unit 21: Central nervous system medicines and anaesthesia
Unit 22: Infections immunological products and vaccines
Unit 23: Endocrine and genito-urinary medicines
Unit 24: Malignant disease immunosuppressive and musculoskeletal medicines
Unit 25: Eye ear nose and dermatological medicines

You are asked within the surveys to comment on whether the evidence provided for the units matches evidence listed in the National Occupational Standards (NOS). A copy of the Pharmacy National Occupational Standards Review documents which provides further information can be accessed here

We would be grateful if you could complete your review by midnight on Sunday 22nd July 2018, to enable us to collate the responses and feedback, collectively, by the 30th July 2018 deadline for Skills for Health.
APTUK are holding 2 Skype meetings to provide pharmacy technicians with information about the content of the qualification, answer any questions and allow you to feed into APTUK’s response. The new qualification consists of 25 individual units and the consultation asks responders to consider replying all to. Each meeting will focus on a variety of different units and members should can choose to participate in either one or both meetings from the choices below.
