World Diabetes Day

World diabetes day falls every year on 14 November and is a day when millions of people around the world come together to raise awareness of diabetes and what it’s really like to live with the condition. It’s a global campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) with activity taking place around the world.

How can Pharmacy Technicians raise awareness and make a positive impact on patients’ healthcare?

Having someone to talk to can make all the difference. Diabetes can be daunting, whether you're newly diagnosed, an old hand, or even if it's someone you know or work with who has the condition.

Useful resources, patient blogs and information on support groups can be found at www.diabetes.org.uk.

Encourage patients to speak about their diabetes

Ask patients if they find certain times of year difficult. Winter can be a difficult time to stick to a healthy eating plan. Does your community pharmacy provide health check or weight check services? Ask if they would like to return to have regular weight checks and monitoring.

One Diabetes UK Community Champion said:

“When I get feedback from the people I help, it makes me feel good knowing that one person can make a difference in a community. I feel alive!”

If you would like to brush up on your knowledge of diabetes there are a variety of CPD modules within the training section of the website.
