-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To work as a Pharmacy Technician in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) you must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) which is the Pharmacy regulator. They set the criteria for registration. This includes:
a) Qualifications- NVQ level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) and Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science or approved or accredited equivalent.
b) Work experience requirements- the equivalent of 2 years working under the supervision of a Pharmacist. (The criteria is quite complicated so please visit the GPhC website)
c) Fitness to practice declaration. APTUK does not have the resources to map overseas qualifications to determine equivalency. For further information please visit GPhC’s website: www.pharmacyregulation.org

I was out of the country/out of practice when registration when registration became mandatory. I have one of the older qualifications. How can I register now?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Voluntary registration for pharmacy technicians opened in 2005. There was a transitional arrangement in place so that those pharmacy technicians who have older qualifications could register. When registration became mandatory in July 2011, the transitional arrangements closed. From then only those pharmacy technicians who hold the current qualifications (NVQ level 3 Pharmacy Services/Pharmacy Service Skills plus an approved or accredited technical certificate) can register with the General Pharmaceutical Council. If you missed this six year window of opportunity to register you may have to do some additional training which may include completing the NVQ level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Services Skills (QCF). Please contact the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) for further information and guidance.
