Professional Guidance Regarding Vaccine Administration

APTUK welcomes the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care's announcement on LBC radio on the 7th September 2020, that pharmacy technicians are amongst the groups of healthcare professionals being discussed to support future vaccine administration.

The case for pharmacy technicians has been presented and we await confirmation on the legal framework from those with organisational responsibilities to ensure the profession is able to contribute to immunisation programmes safely and effectively.

We recognise that there is a willingness to begin to prepare the profession for this role however APTUK would strongly encourage pharmacy technicians to ensure the correct legal frameworks, regulatory standards and governance are confirmed with employers including job descriptions, vicarious/personal indemnity, training, and any other requirements before administering vaccines. This is to ensure patient safety and to protect pharmacy technicians.

APTUK will continue to keep members and the profession informed as we seek clarity on the next steps following the Secretary of States recognition of the role pharmacy technicians can contribute at this critical time.
