APTUK position statement - Pharmacy Technicians and Preparation of Injectable Medicines

The Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK has published a position statement and principles for the potential mobilisation of the pharmacy technician workforce to prepare injectable medicines (in designated areas outside of a pharmacy aseptic unit) in support of the COVID 19 response.

APTUK has been working with colleagues from the Specialist Pharmacy Services (SPS) and NHS Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance Committee to produce the statement.

The statement has been written to provide guidance points and principles around mobilisation of pharmacy technicians to prepare injectable medicines during the Covid-19 pandemic.

To support the statement we have also signposted to a fast track training package provided by Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust as a resource.

As with all other Covid-19 materials this has been produced to support the pharmacy technician profession and employers with providing a safe operating framework in these challenging times.

Please note that this guidance varies in its recommendations to what would normally be considered appropriate requirements and expectations for this activity due to the current workforce requirements associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

These principles are for application across the UK however it is recognised that each home country may have different resources to support the implementation of any training and assessment for this role.
