Take the 5-day challenge
With the success of Race Equality Week (REW) 2024, APTUK would like to recognise and promote this UK wide movement to address the barriers to race equality in the workplace. So we have joined up with Pharmacy Technicians of Colour (PToC) to gain momentum, accelerate change and unite our organisations into action to address race inequality in the workplace.
This year’s theme #EveryActionCounts is aiming to bring awareness that every small step you take is like sowing the seeds for change, whether big or small, each action matters.
The theme galvanises everyone to focus on taking action. APTUK and PToC are looking to engage our members and the wider pharmacy technician profession to commit to #EveryActionCounts, as everyone needs to contribute to the fight for racial equality in the workplace, regardless of seniority or role status. The sooner we act, the sooner change can become our reality.
We are asking members to participate proactively in this year’s REW 5-Day Challenge.
The activities are to help us reflect and understand what actions are needed to drive race equality. Each daily activity only takes just 5 minutes and on the last day everyone will be ready to make a Big Promise.
Day 1 – Intersectionality
- Understand the meaning of Intersectionality and help others to understand the importance of this.
- Understand the context of this in what we do in our workplace and personal lives to improve our inclusivity and avoidance of unconscious bias.
- Recognise an action of how we can improve our practice to do better at recognising the intersectional aspects of colleagues and communities we serve
Day 2 – Recognising Privilege
- Understand the meaning of privilege
- Identify an action of how personal privilege can be better utilised to voice impactful change
Day 3 – Inclusive Language
- Understand the term and meaning of inclusive language
- Reflect on how you can improve your actions and language to be more inclusive?
Day 4 – Code switching / Masking
- Understand these terms can take on different meanings for different people. They can also be exhausting for those who feel they must hide their true selves
- Code switching and masking can be experienced by many people, including women whose intersectionalities have been marginalized, neurodivergent people, autistic people, and disabled people. Therefore, encourage everyone to embrace their true authentic self and supporting them to achieve this.
Day 5 – The Big Promise
- As registered professionals we are encouraged to reflect through our CPD. The Big Promise urges individuals to make a commitment that is measurable, and they are held accountable in order to create positive change. A pledge that they will work upon throughout the year to improve their awareness, knowledge and inclusive practice. As accountable professionals remember “When we make a promise, we do not break it!”
We invite members and colleagues to participate in the 5-day challenge to help them grow and improve their knowledge and practice in regard to inclusivity and to further embrace diversity.
Work towards a pledge/ promise on the final day challenge to make an impactful change to your professional practice and others.
We will be promoting these challenges on social media and hope you will engage on these platforms with us.
